Five
Strategies for Increasing Store Traffic
Strategy #3:
Create some Buzz About
Your Store
Like Bonnie Raitt once sang in her song, "Let's give them somethin' to talk about..." you should make it your mission to drive traffic to your store by giving the public a reason to talk about your business.
Generally speaking, any publicity is good as long as they spell your name right and there are a number of ways to attract favorable publicity.
A good way to garner publicity is to generate a newsworthy press release as often as possible.
The following are some examples of good press releases that various news media will be glad to publish and distribute:
1. You or a manager has just returned from a manufacturer-sponsored training or certification seminar.
2. Your store has reached a new sales goal for the quarter or year.
3. Your store has served the 100,000th customer since it has been open for business.
4. An employee was recently recognized for achieving an important sales goal.
5. Your store has agreed to sponsor an event for the local Humane Society.
6. Your store has just been appointed the newest retail supplier in the region for a famous-name product.
7. You or a top manager conducted a seminar on retail store management at a local college.
8. You were appointed to an important position at the local Chamber of Commerce.
Local newspapers, in particular, are generally anxious to print newsworthy information about local businesses.
While you cannot be assured of getting your press release published every time, a
consistent effort to get the word out to the media about your business nearly always yields positive results over time.
In the context of the OMS/RSTM framework you should make sure that every news release that you produce is published on your store's website.
The reasons for this are two-fold. First, visitors to your website are looking for reasons to do business with you and newsworthy press releases go a long way to establish and reinforce your reputation in the community.
This is particularly true for people who are new to the community and have no previous knowledge of your business.
The second reason for publishing your news releases online is to
increase your SER (Search Engine Ranking). The more relevant information that you have on your store's website the higher your search engine ranking will likely be.
While there are other factors that also impact your site's SER, the amount of new and relevant information (news releases, in this case) that is published on your site is one of the most critical factors.
The higher your SER, the easier it will be for your customers and prospective customers to find you online.
